Origin

When Kotowa acquired the land in 2017, it bore the marks of years of intensive onion and potato farming: soil stripped of nutrients, its ecosystem severely degraded. From the start, the team committed to a long-term restoration, launching a seven-year project to rebuild soil health and biodiversity. They reintroduced tall native canopy trees and planted low-shade tree lines to restore the microclimate. Moisture returned to the soil gradually, then birds reappeared and began nesting, and wildlife followed.

After seven years of patient recovery, the land responded. Coffee flowered in 2024, and the first full harvest came in 2025.

The farm was named Silvia Marina in honor of the second generation of Kotowa, Ricardo’s mother, who took over stewardship of her father’s coffee plantation after his passing and kept it intact through that transition. Her dedication to what she inherited remains a reference point for how Kotowa approaches the land today.
