Origin

Janson Farms began in 1926 when Carl Axel Janson left Sweden for Panama. He settled in Volcán, Chiriquí Province, drawn to its green forests and temperate climate, and began building the farm alongside his wife, Peggy.

Carl purchased land and established the first automated dairy farm in Panama, importing Brangus cattle and several horse breeds. He also introduced largemouth bass and bluegill to the farm’s lakes. In the decades that followed, the farm expanded steadily around the family’s commitment to the land.

In the mid-1980s, the Janson family evaluated the soil with agricultural engineers and recognized its potential for coffee. By 1990, Carl’s sons Michael, Carl, Ricardo, and Peter had taken over operations and officially founded Janson Coffee. Guided by their father’s standards for quality and hard work, they built the farm into a specialty coffee producer growing Catuai, Caturra, Pacamara, and Geisha.

The business has since passed to the third and fourth generations. Kai and Janette, Carl’s grandchildren, now lead operations alongside Janette’s son Miguel, representing the fourth generation of the family in the business. Together, the three generations oversee production in Panama and handle both domestic and international sales.

Janson Coffee remains a family business, oriented around the same priorities it has held since the beginning: producing high-quality coffee, farming sustainably, and improving conditions for the people who work the land.
